Uitm tragedy in NZ: my story

Bismillah, alhamdulilah for the life and breath given by Him, al-Fatihah for Haji Shafie and Mariyam Sakinah from Uitm. Below is the chronology of events from our point of view..

About 2am this morning, kak rose of MSD made a call to hubby's cell phone, informing there was an accident involving a group of people from Uitm, on way back from Taupo to Auckland. The other group from the same university were at the Airport. So kak rose requested hubby to call them, console and gave them direction to Hamilton.

Hubby managed to phone them, there were four of them, all lecturers from communication department. They wanted to delay their flight, scheduled after 5am (Brunei Airline) but the counter wasn't open yet. Once settled, they would go to Hamilton but needed someone, if possible to accompany them.

Hubby phoned Uncle Aziz but received voice mail. Then txt Ridzuan if he could help, first because he is from Uitm (closely related) and second he stay quite near to the airport. He did'nt respond though... at that time, we were so tired and went asleep.

Woke up a bit late around 5.30am, after solat, hubby txt suhaimi mohd if he could help. From suhaimi, we notice that Ridzuan had already fetch them from the airport and were with him. He actually checked his phone after subh around 4am and immediately went to airport. He might accompany them to Hamilton.. Alhamdulillah..

I went to AUT that morning, so hubby continued to communicate with our friends. News was already there in the papers (like utusan online, NZ Herald, and Waikato Times). Ridzuan, Uncle Aziz, Untie Fatimah and that 4 Uitm lecturers went to Hamilton that morning. Then kak rose informed that one of the student's parents are on their was from m'sia to NZ. Since Zainul send Suhaimi Mohd to Airport that morning (Suhaimi Mohd was on his way back for 'balik kampung'), he waited for the parents and intended to accompany them to Hamilton. Upon knowing about this from hubby, Azhar voluntereed to help them. So he and Yus straight away went to Airport around 12 noon.

That night, I received info there are 10 of them, 5 lecturers (including a newly appointed deputy dean) 5 students (two of them are sibling, so one of them is not Uitm student).

Few things that people may not know.. and some points to ponder as well...

- Due to feeling unwell, those 4 lecturers did not joint the other group to Taupo, so they would meet them at the Airport. There are times when we are having difficulties/some health problem so we are not able to do whatever we plan to do, e.g. going somewhere, etc. So don't complain because instead, like those 4 leacturers, we may involve in something more difficult/dangerous than that...

- NZ road rules is not similar to other countries like malaysia. One of the 'give way' rules is to give priority to people on your right in intersections. In the incident of Tirau last night, the intersections between State Highway 1 and State Highway 5 is like a Y intersection. Since the Malaysian visitors from Uitm were on SH 1, they assumed they are in the main road, so according to Malaysian road rules, they have the right to move on. However, according to NZ Road Code, they should slow down and give way to any vehicles coming from their right. So a good advice to visitors coming to NZ, please know or at least aware of this rules.

- Get a travel insurance... we just don't know. Tragedy may happen, na'uzubillah...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let us pray for those involved in the accident, including their parents and families. Al-Fatihah...
